Rise for Good
A call to action - to do good
As a large global corporation, we see an incredible opportunity to drive positive change for all our stakeholders. By making every aspect of our business sustainable, we re-affirm our commitment to a better world. From our employees, to the communities which we are a part of, we want to conduct our business consciously and responsibly. In everything we do, we ensure that we Rise to do good.
For us, sustainability means not only the conservation of the environment, but also the well being of our stakeholders, communities, and the world-at-large. It is an integral part of our business, and a defining driver on our road to long-term profitability. Its entails financial growth and profit, and responsibility towards communities and stakeholders, giving back, good governance, ethical practices, and respecting the law of the land.
Three group companies - Mahindra & Mahindra, Mahindra Finance and Tech Mahindra - have featured in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index 2015. While Mahindra & Mahindra and Mahindra Finance feature in the "Emerging Markets Index", Tech Mahindra features in both, the DJSI Emerging Market Index and the World Index. This is proof, if any, of how we are performing on driving the sustainability agenda.
From embedding sustainability as a business driver across the Group to empowering individual businesses to drive sustainability, within eight years, we have successfully cascaded sustainability from a boardroom vision to a shop floor reality. Powered by Alternative Thinking - our bespoke approach to sustainability, we enhanced awareness, expounded a strong business case to employees, institutionalised frameworks, invested in capacity building plus rewarded and recognised outstanding performers.
Our Impact
At Mahindra, we believe our responsibility to our stakeholders extends beyond providing great products and services, to the integrity of our manufacturing processes. Our facilities follow comprehensive plans to reduce waste, conserve resources, and minimise emissions. All our Automotive, Farm Equipment, and Components plants are either already ISO 14001:2004 certified or in the process of obtaining certification.
Our innovative and impactful Employee Social Options (Esops) programme supports employees in creating volunteer projects in under-privileged communities in and around their workplace. Employees generate ideas for projects, implement annual activity plans, and monitor results. In 2014-2015, 33,490 volunteers contributed 229,670 man-hours towards social programmes. Together, the team Esops initiated 1,128 activities.

We are committed to the belief that "doing good makes good business sense". Today, several businesses within the group have "doing good" as their core value proposition - from the Farm Equipment sector's mission of driving rural prosperity worldwide, to our Financial Services business which has become India's largest Non banking Financial Services company in rural India by making financial inclusion its major goals, driving a sustainable future for millions has become our calling. Read on, to see how our businesses drive the triple bottomline approach.
Seven years ago, when we embarked on our structured sustainability journey, the concept of sustainability in India was nascent. Like us, most organizations were feeling their way through the topic. While the dominant narrative at the time was sustainability as an add-on responsibility, we were absolutely clear that sustainability is a business paradigm, as important as quality. This led to the articulation of 'Alternative Thinking' -the Mahindra Approach to Sustainability. It sent out a strong message to all stakeholders that for us, sustainability is strategic to business - a platform for innovation, an operational philosophy, a powerful tool to build competitive advantage and the measure of our future readiness.
Today, each business within the group has raised the bar - they have chalked out individual business-wise roadmaps which are more focused, more relevant and more aligned to emerging scenarios and stakeholder expectations.
